Producer David Binder is pleased to announce that the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, which last month received four Tony Awards including Best Revival of a Musical, has recouped its initial capitalization investment as of the week ending Sunday, July 13.

In a statement, producer David Binder said, “Well, I guess New York loves Ms. Hedwig! Our girl is feeling it now! All of us at the Belasco Theatre couldn’t be more thrilled. We’re so grateful to all the folks who have turned out and we’re especially thankful to all the fans that have flown in from around the world to join our celebration on 44th street. It has been an incredible journey.”

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH has set the box office record at the Belasco four times, while only doing seven performances per week compared to the traditional eight performance week for most Broadway shows.

In addition, three weeks ago in a private reception at the Belasco Theatre (111 West 44th Street), the production presented a check for $100,000 to Hetrick-Martin Institute (HMI), the nation’s oldest and largest organization helping gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender, and questioning (LGBTQ) youth to reach their full potential. This first disbursement from HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH is part of the ongoing partnership with HMI that was announced in March.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, the musical with book by John Cameron Mitchell and music and lyrics by Stephen Trask, directed by Michael Mayer won four Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, Best Actor (Neil Patrick Harris), Best Featured Actress (Lena Hall), and Best Lighting (Kevin Adams). In addition, the production has been honored with Best Musical Revival by the Drama Desk, Drama League, and Outer Critics Circle Awards.

Starting Wednesday, August 20, Tony Award nominee Andrew Rannells will take over the role of Hedwig joining Tony Award winner Lena Hall as Yitzhak.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH started previews Saturday, March 29 at the Belasco Theatre and opened

Tuesday, April 22 to rave reviews. The New York Times called the show “An unqualified pleasure” and Variety called it “a spectacular revival.” Critics acclaimed authors John Cameron Mitchell’s book as “wonderfully funny” (NY1) and Stephen Trask’s score “induces euphoria” (Time Out New York) and together they are “geniuses” (Harper’s Bazaar). Michael Mayer’s direction was heralded as “razor sharp” (USA Today) and “gleaming” (Chicago Tribune). In HEDWIGNeil Patrick Harris has “joined an elite club of musical-comedy male supernovas” (New York Times) and “crushes it” (Associated Press). Lena Hall’s performance has been proclaimed as “magnificent and dazzlingly intense (Chicago Tribune) and “gives you chills” (The Guardian).

“Internationally ignored song stylist” Hedwig Robinson (Neil Patrick Harris) brings her fourth-wall-smashing rock and roll saga to New York to set the recordstraight about her life, her loves, and the botched operation that left her with that “angry inch.”

HEDWIG has inspired a generation of young theatre writers and audiences. This wickedly funny and heartbreaking show was called “the Best Rock Musical Ever” by Rolling Stone and “the most exciting rock score written for the theatre since, oh, ever,” by Time Magazine.

HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH  was originally produced by David Binder off off Broadway at Westbeth and then, under the direction of Peter Askin, ran over two years at the Jane Street Theatre beginning in February 1998. The musical won the Outer Critics Circle Award for Best Off-Broadway Musical and both John Cameron Mitchell and Stephen Trask won Obies in 2001. It won a 1998 New York Magazine Award and Entertainment Weekly’s “Soundtrack of the Year” Award. Time Magazine named HEDWIG the Top Musical of 1998.

The film of HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH, directed by John Cameron Mitchell, won the Audience Award and Best Director Awards at Sundance. Mitchell won the Best New Director from the National Board of Review, the Gotham Awards, and the LA Critics Society. Stage productions have played for many years in Japan and in 2008, Korea hosted a popular televised reality show about the search for a new star to play Hedwig.
