On the heels of strong box office and the best reviews of the season, the producers of Buyer & Cellar, starring Michael Urie (“Ugly Betty”), written by Jonathan Tolins, and directed by Stephen Brackett, have announced that the hit off-Broadway comedy will now play an open-ended run at the Barrow Street Theatre.  Tickets are now on sale through Sunday, October 13.

Alex More has a story to tell.  A struggling actor in L.A., Alex takes a job working in the mall in Barbra Streisand's Malibu basement.  One day, the Lady Herself comes downstairs to play.  It feels like real bonding in the basement, but will their relationship ever make it upstairs?  Buyer & Cellar is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things, and the oddest of odd jobs.

Buyer & Cellar has been breaking box office records at the Barrow Street Theatre and garnering more rave reviews following its opening there in June:

"A smash hit!  Outrageous, inventive, and downright gut-busting."
--WNBC-TV

"Audaciously original.  Hilariously clever."
--Roma Torre, New York 1 News

"Beyond brilliant.  This show will go down like 'butta.'"
--Entertainment Weekly

"A hilarious delight.  A masterful performance."
--Jesse Oxfeld, The New York Observer

"Absolutely delicious."
--Marilyn Stasio, Variety

"Inspired.  Clever, original, and lovable."
--Linda Winer, Newsday

"A Runaway Hit!”
--Rex Reed

In addition to rave reviews and strong word-of-mouth, the play has been featured in the past few weeks by numerous media outlets, including The New York Times Arts & Leisure section, Daily News, New York Post, The New York Observer, Entertainment Weekly, New York 1 News, WNBC-TV, and WCBS Radio.

Buyer & Cellar is the recipient of the 2013 Drama Desk, Clarence Derwent, and Off-Broadway Alliance awards.  Following the play’s world premiere in April 2013 at Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, the critics were wowed:

“An irresistible play.  Seriously funny.  The wit and invention of Mr. Tolins’s writing and the immersive storytelling skills of Mr. Urie are such that not only do they spin a sturdy narrative out of this preposterous situation, they actually persuade you to buy into it."
--David Rooney, The New York Times

"Hilarious.  A multidimensional unraveling of our voyeuristic enjoyment of celebrity entitlement.  The best solo show in the city."
--Peter Marks, The Washington Post

"Utterly charming and often whacky.  Under the playful and efficient direction of Stephen Brackett, Michael Urie is funny and touching, delivering a winning, sweet performance.  Tolins’s script sparkles with sly humor."
--Mark Kennedy, Associated Press

"Michael Urie is hilarious…in a delectable star turn.  Buyer & Cellar is a bracingly bright, one-man fantasia about truth, celebrity, and the pursuit of utopia."
--Joe Dziemianowicz, Daily News

"Giddily funny.  Michael Urie is a performer of enormous charm and warmth who can also whip out fine dramatic acting when required."
--Adam Feldman, Time Out New York

"Fantastically funny."
--Elisabeth Vincentelli, New York Post

"Dense with laughs, pathos, and even a little suspense."
--Stephan Lee, Entertainment Weekly

"Michael Urie is masterful.  Hilarious."
--Jesse Green, New York

"Under Stephen Brackett’s intelligent, resourceful direction, this very entertaining piece  by Jonathan Tolins—packed with movie and Broadway references, jokes galore, and a number of nutty impersonations—strikes a nice balance between the wacky and the wonderful, resulting in a fantasy so delightful you wish it were true.  Michael Urie is ultra-charming."
--The New Yorker
