Manhattan Theatre Club is pleased to announce that the critically acclaimed revival of Henrik Ibsen’s AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE by Rebecca Lenkiewicz, directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes, is extending one week due to popular demand at MTC’s Samuel J. Friedman Theatre (261 West 47th Street). Tickets for the production are now on sale through Sunday, November 18.

Here’s a sampling of what critics have said about the production:

“ROUSING & INVIGORATING. A HIGH-INTENSITY, PEDAL-TO-THE-METAL PRODUCTION. At a time when America’s political discourse is reaching fever pitch, the play’s heated discussion of just who should control the levers of power in a society makes for savory meat to chew on after the curtain has fallen. It is startling to discover how current the play’s ideas feel. Boyd Gaines takes confident advantage of this prized chance to dig into such a rewarding classical role, giving a sterling performance, forceful and fiery. Richard Thomas, as his brother, plays a single-minded villain with elegant authority. The tense face-off that closes the first act is perhaps the production’s highlight, as we watch how long-festering sibling rivalry and firmly opposed worldviews bring the brothers almost to blows.”

Charles Isherwood, The New York Times

“A JAGGED FIST OF A REVIVAL WITH RIPPING THEATRICALITY. Rebecca Lenkiewicz, Doug Hughes, and the first-rate cast – headed by Gaines and Thomas— are true to both Ibsen and to theatergoers hungry for a play as wise about human nature as it is entertaining. This is Hughes’ most muscular, richly ambiguous work since Doubt.”

Linda Winer, Newsday

“A WHITE KNUCKLE THRILLER WITH ALL BUT ENOUGH HEAT TO SET THE STAGE ON FIRE! An Enemy of the People, in a crackling new adaptation courtesy of Lenkiewicz, is an ideological death-match with a rage that evokes Bill O'Reilly and Keith Olberman at their most telegenically furious.”

Adam Markovitz, Entertainment Weekly

“FOUR STARS! An Enemy of the People is the most urgently relevant political drama in New York City right now. Hughes’ complex and richly acted production of Lenkiewicz’s fleet, pointed adaptation scores hard points against real social ills while also suggesting that a passionate crusader, masterfully played by Gaines, frozen in the spotlight of his truth, can sometimes be his own worst enemy.”

Adam Feldman, Time Out New York

AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE features Boyd Gaines (The Columnist, Contact), Richard Thomas (Race, Fifth of July, “The Waltons”), Maïté Alina (Broadway debut), Gerry Bamman (The Merchant of Venice), Kathleen McNenny (Death of a Salesman), Randall Newsome (Inherit The Wind), John Procaccino (Blood and Gifts), Michael Siberry (Mrs. Warren’s Profession), and James Waterston (Parents Evening). The ensemble also includes Mike Boland, Victoria Frings, Andrew Hovelson, John Robert Tillotson and Ray Virta.

This fall on Broadway, the political is about to get very personal. In this fast-paced, two-hour thriller, Dr. Thomas Stockmann (Boyd Gaines) discovers a toxic secret that threatens the health of his entire community. The doctor expects to be hailed as a hero, but his brother, Mayor Peter Stockmann (Richard Thomas), believes the information will destroy the town, forcing the men into a passionate confrontation of political will and personal ethics.

Four-time Tony winner Boyd Gaines (The Columnist, Contact) and Emmy winner Richard Thomas (RaceFifth of July, “The Waltons”) play the clashing brothers in this scintillating, and often surprisingly humorous, new version of Ibsen’s AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE. Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (DoubtThe Royal Family, The Whipping Man,) returns to MTC to direct this bold new version by one of Britain’s most exciting writers, Rebecca Lenkiewicz.

The creative team for AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE includes: John Lee Beatty (scenic design), Catherine Zuber (costume design), Ben Stanton (lighting design), David Van Tieghem (original music & sound design), J. David Brimmer (fight direction), and Tom Watson (hair & wig design).

Tickets for AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE are available by calling Telecharge at 212-239-6200, online by visiting, or by visiting the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre Box Office (261 West 47th Street). Ticket prices are $67 – $120.
