Launching Today! -- the News on all Things Theater in L.A. -- Jun 15-20

For one week - this week - LA is the center of the theatre universe. The RADAR L.A. festival, Hollywood Fringe Festival and National Asian American Theater Conference and Festival have hundreds of performances on offer. And more than 1000 theatre luminaries from all over America are converging on the city to talk about things theatrical.

How to make sense of it all? Who ya gonna call?

Engine28, a project of USC's Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, is rising to the challenge. Engine28 brings together 40 top theatre journalists from all over America who have come to LA for the next six days to create a "pop-up" newsroom to cover it all. launched in the wee hours of this morning and already has more than two dozen stories, blog posts, videos and audio stories on the site. Over the next six days, e28 will produce literally hundreds of stories about LA: Center of The Known Theatre Universe.

We were there last night when the Los Angeles Times debated the place of LA in the theatre world. We reviewed several hot show-openings. We launched a column exploring the "insider's LA." We produced a series of video confessionals about our relationship with theatre. And we posted a contest to find the "best pitcher" in LA. No, not baseball. In a town infamous for people pitching projects, we want to find that "perfect pitch." And you can enter.

The winner not only gets bragging rights in a town renowned for its showbiz hard-sell, but the King (or Queen) of Sling will be interviewed about what turns a pitch into a home run. We'll do a story about you.

Visit for contest details -- then lob that pitch!

In the meantime check out the literally hundreds of stories we'll be posting over the next six days. You want to get to know LA theatre? Here's your chance. Pop in to our Pop-Up Newsroom. We're Engine28!
