Andrew C. McGibbon has spent the past thirty years working in live theatre as a stage manager, general manager, producer and leader in the convergence of Broadway and online.

Mr. McGibbon worked as a stage manager and general manager for ten years. In 1994 he created a website devoted to live theatre, BroadwayWorld-Wide.com. The site was subsequently bought by, and became Playbill.com. He continued to manage the site for Playbill for four years. In 2000 he became the website manager for TonyAwards.com. With the 2008-09 season he finished his ninth year on the show. He has also worked as a webmaster for the Broadway LeagueJazz at Lincoln Center, and as the Director of Digital Media for the New Jersey Performing Arts Center.

Since 2015, Andrew has been working as an architectural photographer and virtual tour photographer known for his photography of theatres such as the Kimmel Center, Tanglewood, Signature Theatre Company, Roundabout Theatre Company, Arena Stage and the Goodspeed Opera House. Mr. McGibbon is a member of the American Theatre Critics Association, the Independent Theatre Bloggers AssociationActors' Equity Association and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, as well as the American Society of Media Photographers

In addition to his work in the theatrical industry, Mr. McGibbon is also a partner in Simple Solutions Distributing, a manufacturer of filtration equipment for the waste-water industry.

“THE LION KING” ROARS INTO THE SMITHSONIAN
AS COSTUME ELEMENTS JOIN MUSEUM’S PERMANENT COLLECTION

LANDMARK MUSICAL SURPASSES
50 MILLION MARK IN WORLDWIDE ATTENDANCE

In a special ceremony today, Disney Theatrical Productions donated objects from the Tony® and Olivier award-winning musical THE LION KING to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History.  Costume elements from the show’s protagonist Simba, and the tribal shaman Rafiki, will join the ranks of iconic objects from Broadway musicals Cats, Rent and The King and I.  The stylized lion mask and headdress of Simba and costume, custom shoes and hat designed for Rafiki will be added into the museum’s permanent entertainment collections.  This landmark musical event recently surpassed the 50 million mark in worldwide attendance, becoming the first American musical to reach that milestone.

The costume components designed by Julie Taymor, and the mask (co-designed by Michael Curry) were conceived for the original Broadway production of THE LION KING, which opened on November 13, 1997.  Taymor, a designer and director, has garnered acclaim for her innovative productions combining actors, masks, puppetry, ritual and large theatrical landscapes.  Entrusted by Disney Theatrical Productions president and producer, Thomas Schumacher, Taymor became chiefly responsible for the transformation of the 1994 Disney animated film into a first-class Broadway musical.  The costume elements are representative of Taymor’s achievement, which blend elements of African art and Broadway artisanship to depict the anthropomorphic animal characters.  In 1998, Taymor won the Tony Award® for Best Costume Design and Best Direction of a Musical for THE LION KING.  The directing honor made Taymor the first woman in theatrical history to win the coveted award.

“Taymor’s designs bring the story of Simba the lion cub, fulfilling his destiny to become King in the African Pride Lands, to life,” said museum director Brent D. Glass.  “This donation is a significant addition to the museum’s entertainment collection and joins materials representative of Broadway hits.”

“It is a tremendous honor to see Taymor’s groundbreaking creative vision recognized by a world-renowned organization like the Smithsonian,” said Thomas Schumacher, producer and president of Disney Theatrical Productions. “‘The Lion King’ is more than a musical—it has become a global phenomenon, and this donation forever seals its place as an icon of American culture in one of our country’s leading history museums.”

The Simba mask-headdress is made of carbon graphite, a lightweight but durable material cast from a silicone mold, paint and polyester fibers.  The Rafiki costume is made of cotton fabric, decorated with metal amulets, and a horsehair collar.  The hat is made of textured kente cloth and the custom shoes are made of rubber.

Now in its 12th year, Disney’s THE LION KING continues to reign as one of the most popular shows on Broadway and around the world.  The global phenomenon is the winner of more than 70 major awards worldwide, including the 1998 Tony Award® and NY Drama Critics Award for Best Musical, the 1999 Grammy® for Best Musical Show Album, and the 1999 Laurence Olivier Awards for Best Choreography and Best Costume Design. 

To date, the show has been presented in 13 different countries (US, Canada, UK, Japan, Germany, Holland, France, Mexico, Australia, China, Taiwan, South Africa and Korea).  The Broadway production will play its 5000th performance this November and the London company will celebrate its 10th anniversary in October making THE LION KING one of only five musical productions in theatre history to play for ten years or more on both Broadway and the West End.  In addition to Broadway and a North American tour, THE LION KING can also be seen on stage in London, Hamburg, Paris and Tokyo.  In May 2009, a sit-down production of THE LION KING opened at Mandalay Bay Theatre – the first ever Disney Theatrical Production to be launched in Las Vegas.

THE LION KING began as a 1994 animated feature-length film developed and produced by the Walt Disney Company.  The story, a coming of age parable set among animals indigenous to its setting, the African veldt, tells the tale of Simba, the lion cub who rises to be the King of the jungle.

Julie Taymor, along with designer Michael Curry, created hundreds of masks and puppets for THE LION KING.  Scenic design is by Richard Hudson; costume design is by Julie Taymor; lighting design is by Donald Holder.  Choreography is by Garth Fagan.  The book has been adapted by Roger Allers, who co-directed the animated feature and Irene Mecchi, who co-wrote the screenplay of THE LION KING

The score features Elton John and Tim Rice’s music from the animated film along with three new songs by John and Rice, additional musical material by South African Lebo M, Mark Mancina, Jay Rifkin, Julie Taymor and Hans Zimmer and music from an album inspired by the animated film, "Rhythm of the Pride Lands," written by Lebo M, Mark Mancina and Hans Zimmer.  The resulting sound of THE LION KING score is a fusion of Western popular music and the distinctive sounds and rhythms of Africa, embracing the Academy Award®-winning “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” and the haunting “Shadowlands.”

Stage Directors and Choreographers Society Announces 50th Anniversary One-on-One Conversation with
Hal Prince Monday, October 5th

New York – September 16, 2009 – Stage Directors and Choreographers Society (SDC) announces that the 50th Anniversary installment of the One-on-One Conversation Series will feature Tony-Award winning Director, and Chairman of SDC’s 50th Anniversary Honorary Committee, Hal Prince,. The moderator for the event will be Robert Marx of the Fan Fox and Leslie R. Samuels Foundation. The event will be held on Monday October 5th, 2009 at 5pm at The Mainstage Theatre in the Playwrights Horizons Building, 416 West 42nd St. Tickets are $20 and are available through Ticket Central (www.TicketCentral.com).

SDC’s One-on-One Conversation Series explores the careers and creative processes of the Theatre’s foremost Directors and Choreographers. These evenings provide the rare opportunity to interact with masters of the theatre, and hear them speak on a broad range of topics. Each 90-minute session is an in-depth interview of artists by a moderator, with questions from an audience of Directors, Choreographers, students, theatre artists and theatre enthusiasts.

Hal Prince directed the original productions of Cabaret, Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music, The Phantom of the Opera, She Loves Me, Company, Follies, Candide, Pacific Overtures, Evita, Parade, and LoveMusik. He is currently working on a glamorous new musical, Paradise Found, with Richard Nelson, Ellen Fitzhugh, Jonathan Tunick and Susan Stroman, and music by Johann Strauss II. He is the recipient of a National Medal of Arts for the year 2000 from President Clinton for a career spanning more than 40 years, in which “he changed the nature of the American musical.” The recipient of 21 Tony Awards, he was a 1994 Kennedy Center Honoree.

This One-on-One Conversation Series is part of SDC’s year-long celebration of the Union’s 50th Anniversary. It began in April with a Founders Luncheon at Sardi’s and continues with special events being held at Regional theatres throughout the country and programs such as the One-on-One Conversation with Hal Prince. The most prominent celebration of the year will be the 50th Anniversary Gala to be held on Sunday November 8th at Tribeca Rooftop in New York City. The gala will be a fundraiser for the Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation’s Observership and Fellowship Programs

Forever changed, Carrie’s life did not stay picture perfect.  Fisher is the life of the party in this uproarious and sobering look at her Hollywood hangover.

(New York) – Producer Jeffrey Finn announced today that the upcoming, first-ever Broadway production of  OLEANNA, the provocative drama by Pulitzer Prize winner David Mamet starring Bill Pullman and Julia Stiles, has instituted a special post-show series for audiences during previews.  Entitled TAKE A SIDE: THE OLEANNA TALK-BACK SERIES, this ongoing event will take place after every preview performance (September 29 – October 10) at The Golden Theatre (252 West 45th Street).

Since its instantly incendiary debut in 1992, OLEANNA has consistently been a provocative and stimulating experience for audiences that incites conversation, discussion and intellectual conflict.  The TAKE A SIDE: THE OLEANNA TALK-BACK SERIES is being produced to offer a lively forum for each audience to collectively discuss, debate and comment on the controversial themes of the play with a direct correlation to today’s current issues.  Regarded as one of the most provocative dramas of our time, OLEANNA has always divided audiences into heated, post-show debates often compelling them to fiercely side with either character.  Critics weighing in on this new production during its pre-Broadway, Los Angeles engagement at The Mark Taper Forum confirm that the play hasn’t lost any of its bite, power or relevance, noting the intense post-show conversations that erupt nightly.

With THE OLEANNA TALK-BACK SERIES, for 20-30 minutes following each preview performance, distinguished celebrities from the worlds of media, entertainment, politics, law and education will discuss and debate the issues brought up by this production.  The group of panelists has been specifically chosen to contribute their specialized expertise and further stimulate spirited debate.  Initial confirmed panelists are set to include former New York City mayor David Dinkins; NYC Deputy Mayor of Education and Community Development Dennis Walcott; FOX News Channel legal analyst Lis Wiehl; Partner of Vladeck, Waldman, Elias & Engelhard, P.C. Directed by Tony Award winner Doug Hughes (Doubt), OLEANNA is a gripping account of a power struggle between a male university professor (Pullman) and one of his female students (Stiles).  Currently in rehearsals, the Broadway production will begin previews Tuesday, September 29 with an official Opening Night set for Sunday, October 11 at 6:30 PM.

The Broadway production features scenic design by Neil Patel, costume design by four-time Tony Award winner Catherine Zuber, lighting design by two-time Tony Award winner Donald Holder and fight direction by Rick Sordelet.  Production Stage Manager is Charles Means.  The Broadway production is produced by Jeffrey Finn, Arlene Scanlan, Jed Bernstein, Ken Davenport, Carla Emil, Ergo Entertainment, Harbor Entertainment, Elie Hirschfeld, Rachel Hirschfeld, HOP Theatricals, Brian Fenty/Martha H. Direct from a smash hit engagement in Los Angeles, where it was an instant hit with critics and audiences alike, this new production of OLEANNA premiered to rave reviews at the Mark Taper Forum on June 5, 2009.  The L.A. engagement, presented by Center Theatre Group by special arrangement with Jeffrey Finn, concluded its limited run on July 12, 2009.

Mary Schmidt Campbell (Panelist) was appointed Dean of the Tisch School of the Arts in 1991. Under her stewardship as Dean, the Tisch School has tripled the number of applications it receives, cut its acceptance rate in half, and increased the percentage of minority students studying there from 10% to 40%. She has initiated major renovations of the School's film facilities; inaugurated new programs in Art and Public Policy, Film Preservation and Archiving, and Recorded Music; and is currently leading the School in a $70 million capital campaign. In June 2007, Campbell was nominated by the Governor of New York State to head the New York State Council on the Arts, and was later confirmed as chair by the New York State Senate.   Previously, she was New York City Commissioner of Cultural Affairs from 1987-1991 in the Koch and Dinkins administrations. She has given numerous lectures, authored many papers and articles, and is co-editor of Artistic Citizenship:  A Public Voice for the Arts (2006) and co-author of Harlem Renaissance: Art of Black America (1987) and Memory and Metaphor: The Art of Romare Bearden, 1940-1987 (1991).

David Dinkins (Panelist) on January 1, 1990, was sworn in as the first African American mayor in New York City history. He graduated magna cum laude from Howard University with a degree in mathematics and later received his law degree from Brooklyn Law School. He briefly practiced law in New York City and began his steady ascent in politics. He served as a district leader, was elected a Harlem state Assemblyman in 1966, served as President of the Board of Elections from 1972-73, and City Clerk from 1975-85, before winning election as Manhattan Borough President in 1985. In 1989, he ran for mayor, defeating Mayor Edward I. Koch to win the Democratic nomination. Dinkins went on to defeat Rudolph W. Giuliani.  Among his accomplishments were creating the office of Special Commissioner of Investigations for schools, creating a system of after hour youth centers called Beacon Schools, and working to create an all civilian police complaint review board, as well as being a national voice in favor of anti-apartheid sanctions. Dinkins still remains active in New York City politics, hosts a weekly radio show, and teaches public affairs at Columbia University.

Kaylie Jones (Panelist) is the author of the recently-released Lies My Mother Never Told Me (William Morrow), her memoir about the painful truth about growing up as the daughter of literary royalty (James Jones, From Here to Eternity) and the consequences of a mother-daughter relationship torn apart by miscommunication and alcoholism.  Lies My Mother Never Told Me is a Featured Alternate Selection of Book-of-the-Month Club, Quality Paperback Book Club and BOMC2.  Kaylie is also the author of the novels As Soon As It Rains (her debut), the semiautobiographical A Soldier’s Daughter Never Cries, which was adapted into a film starring Kris Kristofferson, Barbara Hershey, and Leelee Sobieski, Celeste Ascending, Speak Now and Quite the Other Way. In between novels, she writes short stories and screenplays. Laurence Maslon (Panelist) is an Associate Arts Professor at the Graduate Acting Program at New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, with an affiliation in Drama and the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.  His most recent book is Some Like It Hot: The Official 50th Anniversary Companion as well as The South Pacific Companion and The Sound of Music Companion.  With Michael Kantor, he has co-written the six-part PBS series Make ‘Em Laugh: The Funny Business of America, as well as the companion volume.   He and Kantor were nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Writing of a Non-Fiction Series for this show.  He also co-wrote two episodes of the Emmy-winning Broadway: The American Musical with Kantor and the companion volume.   He wrote the acclaimed “American Masters” documentary Richard Rodgers: The Sweetest Sounds and is the editor of Kaufman & Co., the Library of America edition of George S. Kaufman’s plays, as well as his official website, www.georgeskaufman.com.   In 2005, he wrote “Better When It’s Banned,” Jane Krakowski’s debut concert for Jazz at Lincoln Center.  He serves on the nominating committee for the Tony Awards.  

Kathleen M. McKenna (Panelist) is a partner in Proskauer Rose’s Labor & Employment Law Department. With a formidable track record for success in major employment matters, she has extensive experience litigating employment disputes of all types, including defending employers against claims alleging all forms of discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, wrongful discharge, wages and hour claims and breach of contract.  Her clients include major multi-national businesses, such as television networks, pharmaceutical companies, international retailers and law firms. Named among the “Top 50 Female” lawyers in New York byNew York Super Lawyers 2006 and 2007, and recognized by Chambers USA: America’s Leading Business Lawyers 2007 and  The Best Lawyers in America 2007, Kathleen is an elected member of the prestigious College of Labor and Employment Lawyers.  She has served as a featured guest commentator on “ABC World News This Morning,” addressing various employment topics.  Kathleen also regularly publishes and frequently lectures on labor and employment issues.

Mitchell Moss (Panelist) is the Henry Hart Rice Professor Urban Policy and Planning at New York University’s Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. He served as Director of NYU's Taub Urban Research Center from 1987 to 2003, where he directed research projects for the National Science Foundation, Charles Revson Foundation, U.S. Department of Commerce, New York State Economic Development Corporation and leading private corporations. Professor Moss has been on the faculty of NYU since 1973 and served as Chairman of The Interactive Telecommunications Program in the Tisch School of the Arts from 1981-83. He was voted "Best Teacher of the Year" by Wagner School students in 2002. Moss's essays have been published in The New York Times, New York Post, Daily News, Newsday, and The New York Observer. He has appeared on “ABC World News Tonight,” “The Today Show,” “Hardball” and the “NBC Nightly News.” In 2001, he served as an advisor to the mayoral campaign of Michael R. Bloomberg.

Wayne N. Outten (Panelist) is the founding and managing partner of Outten & Golden LLP. His practice focuses exclusively on representing individuals in all areas of employment law. Mr. Outten has lectured extensively on employment law, especially on negotiation, mediation, and arbitration of employment disputes, on employment and severance agreements, and on retaliation and whistleblower claims. He is a widely published author whose work is frequently found in legal and popular publications. He is a founding member of the Executive Board of the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA) and served on its Board for more than 11 years.  For almost 20 years, he was a member of the Board of the New York Civil Liberties Union. Mr. Outten’s notable cases include a recovery of $12 million in a gender discrimination/retaliation case against Morgan Stanley in federal court and (with partner Larry Moy) $18.9 million arbitration award in a breach of contract case against Deutsche Bank – one of the largest arbitration awards in an employment case. He is a member of the bars of New York, the U.S. Supreme Court, the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, and the Second Circuit Court of Appeals.

Anne C. Vladeck (Panelist) is a partner at Vladeck, Waldman, Elias & Engelhard, P.C. where she focuses her practice on employment matters, including discrimination, sexual harassment, defamation, union-side labor law, and litigation. In addition to being an adjunct faculty member at Columbia University Law School and Fordham Law School, Ms. Vladeck is a past President of the Federal Bar Council Inn of Court, a trustee of the Federal Bar Foundation, a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers, and a member of the Professional Discipline Committee of the Association of the Bar of the City of New York. Ms. Vladeck received her B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania, and J.D. from Columbia University School of Law. She has previously served as an adjunct faculty member at Cardozo Law School. She regularly speaks on employment law and related topics at the Practicing law Institute, ALI/ABA, ABA, NYSBA, and N.Y.U. Conference, among others.

Dennis Walcott (Panelist) is the Deputy Mayor for Education and Community Development. In that capacity, he oversees and coordinates the operations of the Department of Education and the Department of Youth and Community Development, as well as maintains liaison with and reviews the activities of the New York City School Construction Authority, City University of New York, City University Construction Fund and the New York City Housing Authority. Walcott is also responsible for maintaining liaison with community-based organizations citywide and coordinating policies concerning youth programs and adult education. He serves as Co-Chair of the Mayors Commission for Construction Opportunity. A product of the New York City public school system, Walcott received a Masters of Social Work from Fordham University and a Masters of Education from the University of Bridgeport.

Lis Wiehl (Panelist) joined FOX News Channel (FNC) as a legal analyst in October 2001. Currently an associate professor of law at the University of Washington School of Law, Wiehl also serves as a legal commentator on National Public Radio’s All Things Considered. Prior to joining FNC, Wiehl served as a legal analyst for KIRO-TV (CBS). From November 2000-February 2001, she provided legal analysis for NBC News. Before that, Wiehl held the position of principal deputy chief minority investigative counsel for the United States House of Representatives, Committee on Judiciary. Additionally, from 1990-1995, she served as an executive assistant at the United States Attorney’s office. Wiehl began her career as a litigation associate for Perkins Coie law firm. She earned her Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School in 1987. She is also the author of The 51% Minority: How Women Still Are Not Equal and What You Can Do About It.

Bill Pullman (John) returns to the Broadway stage for the first time since he received a 2002 Drama Desk Award nomination starring opposite Mercedes Ruehl in Edward Albee’s Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning play The Goat, or Who is Sylvia?.  Other recent stage work includes a second Drama Desk nomination for his appearance in Albee’s Peter and Jerry in 2007 at Second Stage and the 2006 Kennedy Center production of The Subject Was Roses (Helen Hayes Award nomination).  With a major career in stage, film and television, Pullman is perhaps best known for his roles in the films Independence Day, Lost Highway, Sleepless in Seattle, Ruthless People, While You Were Sleeping, The Grudge, Spaceballs, Scary Movie 4, and the recent Bottle Shock, Noble Son and Surveillance.

Julia Stiles (Carol) earned great acclaim for her performance in a previous production of Oleanna in London’s West End in 2004. Having begun her career in the Theater at a young age in New York City, her additional stage credits include the 2002 Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night as Viola, James Lapine’s Fran’s Bed at Playwrights Horizons and The Vagina Monologues. Oleanna will mark her Broadway debut.  She made her cinematic debut at age 15 in I Love You, I Love You Not with Claire Danes.  She followed this with many films, most notably, 10 Things I Hate About You, Save the Last Dance,  Mona Lisa Smiles,two David Mamet films State and Main and Edmond and the three Bourne movies – The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum.

David Mamet (Playwright) is the acclaimed and award-winning author of numerous plays including Glengarry Glen Ross (1984 Pulitzer Prize and New York Drama Critics Circle Award, 2005 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play), American Buffalo, Boston Marriage, November, Speed-The-Plow and The Cryptogram. His new play Race will debut on Broadway this fall and he’ll also be represented Off-Broadway with a double bill of one acts at The Atlantic Theatre Company, of which he is a Founding Member. He has written the screenplays for such films as The Verdict, The Untouchables, Wag the Dog and his own adaptation of Oleanna, and has twice been nominated for an Academy Award. He has written and directed 10 films including Homicide, The Spanish Prisoner, State and Main, House of Games, Spartan and Redbelt and he’s also directed for the Theater. 

Doug Hughes (Director) won the 2005 Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, Lortel and Callaway awards for his direction of John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt.  His other Broadway credits include A Man for All Seasons, Mauritius, Inherit the Wind, A Touch of the Poet, A Naked Girl on the Appian Way and Frozen (Tony nomination). His many Off-Broadway productions include The Grey Zone (Obie Award), Flesh and Blood (Callaway Award), Farragut North, Howard Katz and The Paris Letter, and he’s also directed numerous production for most of the nation’s leading theatre companies.  He’s Resident Director of New York’s Roundabout Theatre Company and in 2005 he won an Obie Award for Sustained Excellence. This fall he’s also directing a Broadway revival of The Royal Family for MTC.

As previously announced, Fela!, the new musical based on the life and music of groundbreaking African composer, performer and activist Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, will arrive on Broadway at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre (230 West 49th Street) where performances will commence on Monday, October 19 with an official opening set for Monday, November 23.  This new musical is directed and choreographed by Tony® Award-winner Bill T. Jones (Spring Awakening), with a book by Jim Lewis and Bill T. JonesSahr Ngaujah and Kevin Mambo will play the title character on alternate performances, while the world renowned Antibalas and other members of the NYC Afrobeat community, under the direction of Aaron Johnson, will again perform Kuti’s rousing music live onstage.  Winner of this year’s Lucille Lortel Award for Best Musical, Fela! was conceived by Bill T. In this revolutionary new musical, directed and choreographed by Tony® Award-winner Bill T. Fela! will feature a multi-cultural cast led by Sahr Ngaujah (recipient of an Obie Award for his performance in the title role Off-Broadway) and Kevin Mambo (MTC’s Ruined), alternating in the role of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti.  Lillias White will play Funmilayo Ransome Kuti (Fela’s mother) and Saycon Sengbloh (Hair) plays Sandra, Kuti’s love interest.  The company also includes Corey Baker, Hettie Barnhill, Nicole Chantal DeWeever, Lauren Deveaux, Elasea Douglas, Rujeko Dumbutshena, Catherine Foster, Talu Green, Shaneeka Harrell, Abena Koomson, Ismael Kouyate, Gelan Lambert, Farai M. THE CREATIVE TEAM

BILL T. JONES (Conceiver / Director / Choreographer / Book Writer) is a 2007 Tony® Award winner and the recipient of the 2007 Obie Award and 2006 Stage Directors and Choreographers Foundation CALLAWAY Award for his choreography for Spring Awakening, the recipient of the 2007 USA Eileen Harris Norton Fellowship, the 2006 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Choreography for The Seven, the 2005 Samuel H. Scripps American Dance Festival Award for Lifetime Achievement, the prestigious 2005 Wexner Prize, and the Aaron Davis Hall Harlem Renaissance Award. He is also a MacArthur “Genius” Award recipient in 1994, named one of America’s Irreplaceable Dance Treasures by the Dance Heritage Coalition in 2000, and was awarded The 2003 Dorothy and Lillian Gish Prize for which recipients are considered trailblazers who have redefined their art and reshaped the cultural landscape. He began his dance training at the State University of New York at Binghamton (SUNY), where he studied classical ballet and modern dance. After living in Amsterdam, Mr. Jones returned to SUNY, where he became co-founder of the American Dance Asylum in 1973. Before forming Bill T. Jones/Arnie Zane Dance Company in 1982, Mr. Jones choreographed and performed nationally and internationally as a soloist and duet company with his late partner, Arnie Zane.

In addition to creating more than 100 works for his own company, Mr. Jones has received many commissions to create dances for modern and ballet companies including Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Axis Dance Company, Boston Ballet, Lyon Opera Ballet, Berkshire Ballet, Berlin Opera Ballet and Diversions Dance Company, and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company’s The Flight Project. He has also received numerous commissions to create new works for his own company, including premieres for the American Dance Festival, the Next Wave Festival at the Brooklyn Academy of Music and for St. Luke’s Chamber Orchestra. In 1995, Mr. Jones directed and performed in a collaborative work with Toni Morrison and Max Roach, Degga, commissioned by Lincoln Center’s Serious Fun Festival and with Jessye Norman, How! Do! We! Do! which premiered at New York’s City Center in 1999 as part of Lincoln Center’s Great Performers New Visions series. The Breathing Show, Mr. Jones’ evening long solo, toured for three years, and his second solo show, As I Was Saying…, toured for more than two. He has directed and choreographed for theatre and opera, most recently choreographing Off-Broadway for the New York Theatre Workshop’s production of The Seven for which he was awarded the 2006 Lucille Lortel Award for Best Choreography and for the Broadway musical Spring Awakening.

Mr. Jones has received honorary doctorates from the Art Institute of Chicago, Bard College, Columbia College, the Juilliard School, Swarthmore College and Yales as well as the SUNY Binghamton Distinguished Alumni Award.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti

Fela Ransome Kuti was born in Abeokuta, Nigeria, north of Lagos in 1938. His father was a Christian schoolmaster, minister and master pianist and his mother was a world-recognized feminist leader, who was very active in the anti-colonial Nigerian women's movement during the struggle for independence. 

Fela was educated in Nigeria amongst the indigenous elite.  Ironically, many of his classmates in his Nigerian school would become the very military leaders he so vociferously opposed. 

With medical aspirations for their offspring (Fela’s older brother, Koye, was to become a Deputy Director of the World Health Organization and his younger brother, Beko, President of the Nigerian Medical Association) in 1958 Fela's parents sent him to London for a medical education. Instead, he registered at Trinity College's school of music where he studied composition and chose the trumpet as his instrument. Quickly tiring of European composers, Fela, struck by Miles Davis and Frank Sinatra, formed the Koola Lobitos in 1961, and his band became a fixture in London's club scene. Two years later, Fela returned to Nigeria, restarted the Koola Lobitos, and became influenced by James Brown. Trying to find an authentic musical voice, he added elements of traditional Yoruba, high life and jazz, and "Afrobeat" was born. In 1969, Fela's Koola Lobitos traveled to Los Angeles to tour and record. During his eight months in the US, with LA as a home base, Fela befriended Sandra Isidore, who introduced him to the writings and politics of Malcolm X, Eldridge Cleaver and other proponents of Black nationalism and Afrocentrism.

With this new politically explicit and critical worldview, Fela reformed the Koola Lobitos as Nigeria 70 and returned to Lagos. He founded a commune/recording studio called the Kalakuta Republic, complete with his own private nightclub, The Shrine, and Fela dropped his given middle name "Ransome," and replaced it with a Yoruba name "Anikulapo" (meaning "he who carries death in his pouch"). Playing constantly and recording at a ferocious pace, Fela and band (who were now called Africa 70) became huge stars in West Africa and beyond. His music served as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised, critiquing the military government, and made Fela not only a pop star but thrust him into political life. People took to the streets singing his songs and the military responded by viciously harassing Fela, jailing him and nearly killing him on several occasions.

In 1977, during a government-sanctioned attack on his Kalakuta Republic commune, Fela and other members of his commune were arrested; Fela himself suffered a fractured skull as well as other broken bones; a number of women living at Kalakuta were beaten and raped; and his 82-year old mother was thrown from an upstairs window, inflicting injuries that would later prove fatal. The soldiers set fire to the compound and prevented fire fighters from reaching the area. Fela's recording studio, all his master tapes and musical instruments and the only known copy of his self-financed film Black President were destroyed.

After the Kalakuta tragedy, Fela briefly lived in exile in Ghana, returning to Nigeria in 1978. A year later, he formed his own political party, MOP (Movement of the People) and ran for president in two elections, although his campaigning was consistently blocked by the military. As the '80s ended, Fela recorded blistering attacks against Nigeria's corrupt military government.

Fela Anikulapo-Kuti was arrested more than two hundred times in his life, and charged with almost every conceivable crime, although only serving one eighteen month sentence in jail for a currency violation. Despite this constant harassment he continued to live in Nigeria even though, as an icon in the international world of rock and roll, soul, jazz and hip-hop, he could have at any point abandoned Nigeria and led the life of an international music superstar.  His death on August 3, 1997 of complications from AIDS deeply affected musicians and fans internationally, as a unique and ineffable musical and sociopolitical voice was lost. In Nigeria one million people attended his funeral. His incredible body of work, almost 70 albums, is now available, through public demand, all over the world.

Barbara Manocherian, Richard Willis and Anthony Barrile in association with Naked Angels (Geoffrey Nauffts, Artistic Director; John Alexander, Managing Director; Andy Donald, Associate Artistic Director; Brittany O’Neill, Producer) are pleased to announce that NEXT FALL, the critically-acclaimed new play by Geoffrey Nauffts and directed by Sheryl Kaller, will open on Broadway on Thursday, March 11, 2010 with preview performances beginning in mid-February, 2010 at the Helen Hayes Theatre (240 West 44th Street).

NEXT FALL had its world premiere in a Naked Angels production, opening to critical acclaim on Wednesday, June 3, 2009 at the Peter Jay Sharp Theater. NEXT FALL played a sold-out run off-Broadway, extending three times, and played through August 8th.

Geoffrey Nauffts’ NEXT FALL takes a witty and provocative look at faith, commitment and unconditional love. While the play’s central story focuses on the 5-year relationship between Adam and Luke, NEXT FALL goes beyond a typical love story. This timely and compelling new American play forces us all to examine what it means to “believe” and what it might cost us not to.

GEOFFREY NAUFFTS (Playwright) has worked as an actor both on and off Broadway, regionally and extensively in film and television. He's directed short plays by Kenneth Lonergan, Frank Pugliese, David Marshall Grant, Theresa Rebeck and Suzan-Lori Parks, as well as the critically acclaimed production of Steven Belber's Tape in New York, Los Angeles and London. He wrote, directed and co-starred in the award-winning short film Baby Steps with Kathy Bates and co-wrote Jenifer, a movie of the week for CBS. He's currently collaborating with Anthony Barrile and Elton John on a score for Showstopper, a screenplay he co-wrote with Barrile for Ben Stiller's company, Red Hour. In the fall of 2007 he took over as artistic director of Naked Angels where he's been a proud member for over twenty-two years. His play Next Fall was the winner of the 2008 Theater Visions Fund Award from the Blanche and Irving Laurie Foundation.

SHERYL KALLER (Director) most recently directed Dangerous Beauty music by Michele Brourman, lyrics by Amanda McBroom and book by Jeannine Dominy at the American Music Theater Project, Adrift In Macao music by Peter Melnick, book and lyrics by Christopher Durang at Primary Stages and Philadelphia Theater Comapny, Jayson With A Y by Darci Picoult at The New Group, The Pursuit Of Happiness by Richard Dresser at the Hudson Stage Company, The Molly Maguires music and lyrics by Sid Cherry, book by Bill Strzempeck at the Berry Center for the Performing Arts., and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater music by Alan Menken, book and lyrics by Howard Ashman at The York Theater, She has directed at many theaters including the New Group, Primary Stages New York Stage and Film, Naked Angels, A.C.T., Philadelphia Theater Company, The Rubicon, The York, EST, National Theater of the Deaf, Man In The Moon (London. She was a member of the former Circle Rep Lab and the recipient of a Dramalogue Award/ Best New Musical. Sheryl co-founded and was the Artistic Director of Two Island Productions, a New York and Bermuda-based theater company devoted to developing and producing original plays, playwright retreats/ workshops, screenplays, concerts and youth arts and education programs.
